The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin is a short yet complex story, describing Mrs Mallard’s feelings. It focuses on the unfolding emotional state of Mrs Mallard after the news of her husbands death, and has overflowing symbolism and imagery. It is an impressive literary piece that touches the readers’ feelings and mind and allows the reader to have a connection to Mrs Mallard’s emotional process. Although the story is short, it is complete with each word carrying deep sense and meaning. It is written in the 19th century, a time that had highly restrictive gender roles that forbade women to live as they saw fit. Mrs Mallard â€Å"young, with a fair, calm face† (158) is sitting in the armchair with a â€Å"dull stare in her eyes† (158) which â€Å"indicated of intelligent thought† (158). Reading this, the reader can form an idea of what Mrs Mallard looks like, and we understand that there’s something going on in Mrs Mallards head, something changing everything in her mind. Mrs Mallard is still struggling to figure it out but â€Å"she felt it, creeping out of the sky, reaching towards her through the sounds, the scents, the color that filled the air†. From this we understand that she is beginning to realise it, and her soul is beginning to fill with happiness of freedom, which is in all the sounds, smells and things she sees. For one moment, however, she is somewhat afraid of feeling happy about her freedom and â€Å"she was striving to beat it back with her will† (159). This shows that Mrs Mallard is a â€Å"product† of her time, and is striving to feel what is socially accepted. She realizes that society would determine her thoughts of freedom inappropriate, but she can’t stop herself from feeling that way. However, â€Å"she knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death† (159), but it’s just a reaction, one that society expects her to have, and one that many have when dealing with the death of someone they know. Through the strong foundation of Isolationism and the policies enacted such as The Monroe Doctrine, the United States played a largely neutral role in foreign affairs. The Monroe Doctrine passed in 1823 was to forbid European nations from colonizing any territory in the Western Hemisphere. Although the United States didn’t have the authority or firepower to back this up, it resulted in almost four decades of compulsory US involvement in any foreign affair. After the Civil War, Isolationistic practices grew stronger as the government had to find a way to re-unite the torn nation. President Grover Cleveland promised to avoid committing the nation to form any alliances with other countries while also opposed to the acquisition of new land. Answer: Introduction Palliative care is a personalized medical assistance given to people with terminal or chronic illness. It is focused on providing relief to ailing patients. It provides sentimental care for improving the quality of life. Specially trained doctors, nurses, and other attandents treat the patients. These specialist works together to provide support to the patient and his/her family in times of great adversity. Symptoms of diseases, which include depression along with mood swings, pain in the body, nausea and headache, loss of appetite, difficulty in sleeping along with the terminal illness, cause much stress to the patient. To ease their pain it is necessary to provide them mental strength and treating them with empathy is necessary for their treatment. The palliative care team interacts and communicates with the patient to understand how to care for the patient with greater efficiency. A patient, Mr. Banner age 65, suffering from prostate cancer symptoms he suffers each day are, need to urinate frequently at night, not able to control urine, interrupted flow, painful or burning sensation, blood in urine, pain in hips, thighs and lower back. Prostate cancer is a very slow developing disease. It starts with small changes in shape and size of the prostate gland, also called prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN). Causes of prostate cancer are many and varied they can depend on age, race, lifestyle, genetic makeup, other medications used like steroids, hormonal drugs, enhancement drugs and so on. Patients having BRAC2 gene have an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Diet of the patient is also responsible for developing cancer. Obesities and sexually transmitted diseases increase the instances of development of cancer. An enzyme produced in the body is also responsible for developing prostate cancer. PRSS3 is linked to the formation of aggressive cancer (Zimmermann et al. 2014). The patient is treated with chemotherapy after a period of 17 months the cancer relapsed. The doctors performed Brachytherapy where radioactive seed is implanted into the prostate. The procedure failed other treatments were started like conformal radiotherapy- where radiation beams are shaped in such a way that they overlap and form the same shape as the organ or the region that needs treatment. This type of treatment reduces the healthy tissue exposure to the radiation (Zimmermann et al. 2014). The expert doctors planned to use Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy when other treatment failed to curb the growth of cancerous tumors. The relapse of cancer caused the patient to undergo extensive painful treatment. The patient and his family were slowly losing hope. It was up to the palliative care provider to keep the morale of the patient and his family upbeat. Intensity modulated radiotherapy is performed by beams of variable intensity. This type of radiotherapy is an advanced version of the conformal radiotherapy, usually it is controlled by means of a computer. The computer-controlled linear accelerator controls the rate of intensity of the beam of radio waves. Treatment by this method is performed based on individual cases. In most cases when the cancer is in early stages the doctors, recommend then this type of treatment (Leidinger et al. 2016). As the patient was suffering from an advanced type of cancer that had a tendency to reoccur, the doctors recommended Radial prostatectomy. However, the patient did not consent to the surgical removing of the prostate. Thus, the doctors had to find an alternative method of treatment. The doctors of the palliative care advised the patient and his family about the situation. They provided support and sympathy. As the patient was not consenting to removal of the prostate, the doctors recommended using a combination of radiotherapy and hormone therapy. The procedure for the radiotherapy requires treatment daily. This treatment can be ongoing for about eight weeks. Hormone therapy is a supportive therapy that helps in reducing the risk of the cancer spread or metastasis to other parts of the body. Hormone therapy is most effective during the advanced stage because it slows down and even stops in some cases, the growth of the cancer cells. During the first week of the combination therapy, a ll conditions were normal. In the second week the stats of the patient was stable. However, from the end of the third week the patient experienced some breathing problem due to inflammation of the neck and throat. The doctors after running some test concluded that the hormone therapy was causing an allergic reaction, which was causing the swelling. The doctors then tried it with a different hormone combination along with the radiotherapy. The results were the same, initially the patent responded adequately but then an allergic reaction was seen o develop. The doctors thought it would be safe for the patient to discontinue this way of treatment. They discussed this with the patient family, they gave their consent about discontinuing the treatment and find a better alternative (Leidinger et al. 2016). The other option the doctors provided to the patient was to undergo clinical trials. The clinical trials conducted the expert team was a gamble that the patient family was willing to take, for the sake of the patent life. The clinical trials conducted by the expert team focused on each patient individually (japan 2016). At the start of the clinical trials, the doctors performed blood tests to screen for any pathogen, virus or bacterial origin that may have had a hand in the reoccurrence of the cancer. After that, the doctors performed ultrasound of the lower abdomen to rule out any other parts of the body that may have been affected by the cancer. MRI scan was performed which revealed that the prostate glands were swollen and had tumors growth along its periphery. The doctors talked to the patient and his family about the options and the hypothesis on which they were working. Doctors also discussed the trial results obtained previously and compared the patients results with that of the cured patients. The doctors and the palliative team provided full cooperation to the patient so that he can make his decisions. They gave him information regarding various other treatments that are still available, but they were time consuming and if they did not work then the life of the patient will be at a risk. Th ey gave him mental strength to overcome his fears and provided proof that there is life after the treatment of cancer. The patient Mr. Banner had full rights to express his concern about the procedures. The doctors encouraged him to lead a normal life even when the trials would be ongoing. The disease although dangerous and sometimes fatal but staying healthy and not getting worse was the key to survive cancer. The palliative team and the doctors worked day and night to assure Mr. Banner and his family that they are there to help him and give him all the necessary comfort and support needed to get him through these tough times. They explained to him that even though the condition is irreversible but they are trying their best to help him lead a comfortable and pain free life (Chow et al. 2015). The initial assessment of Mr. Banner revealed that he has lost weight and abdominal pain in control, but the bladder control was lost and had a long way to recovery. The doctor put him through the clinical trial. Initially all the stats were seen to good and stable. The drug seems to work and was not causing any side effects. The kidney function test showed that they were functional at 70% capacity. Due to the advanced age of Mr. Banner 70 %, kidney function was considered normal. During the first week of treatment, the patient responded to the treatment, immuno-fluorescence technology. MRI scan showed that, at the end of the first week 20% cancerous cells were eliminated. The tumor size was seen to reduce a fraction. The reduction of tumor size continued until the end of the third week of the clinical trial. Mr. Banners condition was stable. The abdominal pain and the burning sensation were reducing. The doctors were hopeful about a good recovery. Although the bladder function had y et to return to normal. The doctors prescribed him sleep and rest as the accessory help to endure the highly toxic drug (Bkki et al. 2013). The palliative team regularly communicated with Mr. Banner and his family about his recovery and the things that concerned the doctors. The doctors set up a team of specialists, which included Nephrologists, allergy specialist, a Cardiologist, a Pulmonologist, heading this team were the chief of clinical trials in that hospital. The palliative team informed the patient and his family about his progress each day. They answered any queries that were raised by the patient or his family. They educated his family about palliative care and what it entails. Palliative care was provided from the stage of diagnosis through the end of the treatment. It extends to the follow up Care and until the end of life. The palliative caregiver provides the patient information about the side effects and emotional problems faced by the cancer patients. The specialists work as a part of a multidisciplinary team, which consisted of doctors, nurses, researchers, dieticians, pharmacists. In some cases where th e patient require external help then social workers join the team to help the patient to transition into his or her new life. Palliative caregiver may make recommendations and instructions regarding the future management of the patient. Normally people trust their primary physician than the palliative caregivers thus, it is more feasible for the patient to accept such advice (japan 2016). The clinical trial of Mr. Banner continued, but on the end of the seventh week the health stat of the patient suddenly dropped, the sugar levels became high, the phosphate and the sodium levels dropped. The patient at the end of the week showed symptoms of sepsis. He was rushed to the ICU because the lungs had fluid in them, which was the cause for the sepsis. The patient went into coma. The doctors thought it was to his age and dormant infection in his lungs. The palliative team discussed their option and decided to continue the cancer treatment along with an antibiotic regime to counter the infection in the lungs. This expert decision in the end helped saved the life of Mr. Banner. The palliative team within the hospital was responsible for the good care of the patient and giving hope and encouragement to the patient family. They helped to put the patient and his family at ease. The patient started to recover from the coma. The response to the trial drug was again working. The pati ent recovery was a sign that the drug can be used for the treatment of prostate cancer. This encouraged the researchers to try and use the drug for further trials regarding other types of cancer like cervical cancer, blood cancer, pancreas cancer and other type of malignant tumors that ails half the population on earth (Bkki et al. 2013). The social circumstances of Mr. Banner had changed since he came in the hospital for his treatment. Due to the prolonged treatment with toxic drugs, his immune system is very weak and he has been confined to a germ free, dust free room. His immediate environment has changed and to cope with these change social workers associated with the palliative team helped Mr. Banner to acclimatize with the changes that have been brought about after his extensive treatment. The social worker specialized in this field surveyed Mr. Banners home and provided his opinion on what changes have to be brought about to make the house as dust and germ free as possible. The nurses in the palliative team helped Mr. Banner to take care of his need when he returns home and gave him contact number if any emergencies arose. They also informed his general physician about the medications needed by Mr. Banner and let the GP now about his follow up appointments. Community palliative team was referred to Mr. Banner i f the needs arose (Bill-Axelson et al. 2014). Conclusion In conclusion, it can be said that the palliative teams have members from all walks f life specializing in different things. They not only took care of the patient but also provided care and support to the family of the patient. They took care of the after treatment care at home. The performance of the palliative team was effective due to the efficient communication between the doctors and nurses and other specialists. It teaches discipline, how to be a team player, how to interact with others and is a good source of physical activity. In specific, football utilizes all of these aspects of sports and its a great source of teaching self-restraint and perseverance. Some may say that football is a violent sport or its not beneficial in any way, but in reality it gives a person the basic tools needed not only for playing the game, but also how you interact with people in society. The first process of playing football is getting involved. It is actually very easy to get involved because there are various football programs offered to children as well as teens. To get involved in football you must have the will and dedication because of the amount of time football consumes through practice, meetings and games. People who become initially involved in football usually start early in life usually around nine or ten in peewee football and lasts until theyre thirteen. Even at this early stage of peewee, football is very demanding because of the time involved. This involvement is usually by choice of the child because of interest in football and parents usually dont force their children into playing. Involvement in peewee football is due to the fact that children have a lot more time to play than young adults. Football is also economically feasible for most families because it is relatively inexpensive so football is not restricted in who can play by the amount of mon ey their parents make. The team provides the equipment, with the exception of spikes and a jersey. The total cost of playing football is usually around $60.00 . Usually at the peewee level, you have 1-2 practices a week and a game every week. Also in peewee you have team meetings to discuss defensive and offensive strategy and sometime just to bond with your teammates. Usually this takes place once a week. Continuing involvement in football happens at the high school level because it is the most easily accessible program to teens. A teen will usually continue playing football in high school if they enjoyed playing or they really excelled at it in the peewee level. The good thing about playing high school football is that you dont have to be the best player just dedicated. High school football is more time consuming because you practice 4-5 times a week and have a game once a week, where in peewee you had only one to two practices during a football season. In addition to having more practices you also have more team meetings. In high school football usually you meet every weekday at lunch hour to watch video tape and go over offensive and defensive responsibilities. You also find yourself under the microscope because their may be two to three other guys competing for the same job so you are constantly trying to improve your own abilities and techniques. If you excel at high school footb all you may continue your football career at the college level usually through recruitment. This quote shows that colleges recruit high school players. That was when I started to realize that I was a pretty good athlete and that I was valuable to some people#8230; I got a lot of media attention but I mean that only tells you so much, I mean when you start to find out that you are a good athlete is when the colleges start to recruit you; (Dietz, Prus, Shaffir pg. 114). Colleges dont necessarily recruit you because you get a lot of attention, its what you do on the field. At this level, football is very demanding and doesnt allow much time for other social activities during the football season. During football season in college you have eight to ten practices a week. Most days you have practice in the morning and one in the late afternoon. At the college level, only the best survive. Finally, if you are extremely good you may be drafted to play for a professional team. Here, football becomes more than just a game and physical activity, it becomes a career. Instead of being just a fall sport, football becomes a year round struggle to keep your job and preparing for the next season. Usually dis-involvement comes after high school, around nineteen years old, because of the demanding nature of college and pro football. At this age most teens and young adults become interested in other things and most have other responsibilities that must come first. Mos t become dis-involved because of a part or full time job or their studies are too demanding. Others are just not up to the standards at which you must be to play at a higher level. If one does make it to the college level, usually they will stop playing after their college career is complete (this is typically 4 years). A professional team doesnt draft most college players, and at this point you either get drafted or you move on with your life by pursuing a career. Finally if you make it professionally, you usually become dis-involved simply because you cant compete at that level any more. This usually extends to other aspects of life because you tell yourself that if you can succeed on the field you can succeed off of it as well. The fact that you were part of a team gives you a sense of accomplishment. Also in football, it doesnt matter if youre at the high school, college, or professional level, although this is mostly seen in professional football, you become a role model for younger people. They see that you playing and succeeding at the game it sometimes inspires others to work hard and drive to be the best in life. Football also gives you the identity of being a team player and not always looking out for yourself. People respect that and can also become an asset when applying for a job. Another concept that football addresses is doing activity. By playing football it gives you the experience of teamwork and dedication. You cant learn these in a classroom you must participate in some activity with others to learn these very important qualities and football is a great source of this. In doing activity it gives you a sense of accomplishment and self-fulfillment. You might not have been the best player but you didnt quit and you persevered. Football is also great for future engagements, like getting a job, because it looks great on yourself as far as showing that you can be a team player as well as hard working. The most important aspect of football is experiencing relations. Football allows you to meet and experience many different people over the course of your career. From team meetings to practices to games you spend a lot of time with other players and you become aware of how they operate and become a unit all trying to achieve the same goals. It is important in fo otball to be able to anticipate what your teammates are going to do because not only does it make you better it makes the whole team better. When you play football you build relationships with your teammates, more often than not, you make a lot of new friends. You find yourself spending time with other players off the field such as watching the big game, going to a bar, playing a round of golf in the off season, or simply just hang out;. Football allows you to build relationships that last a lifetime not just a couple of weeks. If people didnt build relationships in football, it would be more of an individual sport and the team would come second. It is also important as a player to have a good relationship with your coach. This allows you to tell him something that is bothering you, ask questions and ask how you can improve as a player. Football has been my life for close to a decade. I have built many friendships over those years and most of those I still have. In my own case I sta rted playing football when I was nine years old for a peewee team. I really wanted to play so my parents enrolled me. It was easy convincing them, considering my father is a legend in Windsor when it comes to football (I dont mean to brag but this is what I was told). I wasnt exactly the best player on the team, but I showed up for practice, team meetings, and games and dedicated myself to it. I loved the game then, just as much as I love it today. Then I played high school football for 5 years and my dedication paid off because in high school I started every game, even though I wasnt the best player on the team. Football also helped me in many of my classes because of learning determination and self-confidence; I was able to increase my marks over the 5 years from sixties in grade nine to seventies and eighties in OAC. I believe football had a lot to do with that. After high school my football career ended and I became dis-involved in football because I couldnt play at the college level. I was a solid player in high school I wasnt a great player. Re-involvement came fairly quick for me because a short year later, this year as a matter of fact, I was asked to be a coach for a local high school team. I was honored by the offer and of coarse I took the opportunity. The fact that my father was the head coach probably had something to do with it, but I was just ecstatic to be back on the football field again, even though I wasnt the one playing. With this coaching position Ive experienced a lot of new relationships. From meeting a whole new group of players to other coaches its been a learning experience and Ive already built new friendships that I know will last a long time. But the most important relationship I believe I have built because of this experience is a better relationship with my father. In the past we have had our differences but because of football weve been closer than I think weve ever been before. Football has proven to me to be worth while. It h as taught me dedication, determination, teamwork among others. Galileo After reading this letter I feel that Galileo had a very opinionated outlook on life and was heavily involved in a struggle for freedom of inquiry. Galileo was a person who had many strong beliefs and would not let people or a document have a say in what he believes. I think that according to Galileo an individual gains knowledge of nature threw observation. Galileo believed no one really went out into the world as he did and used the senses that God gave us when we where created, to observe the physical world. He was a very persistent individual and was always looking further into what he observed our read. Many people went along with how he gained knowledge of nature but the few who did not tried to find other ways to damage his beliefs and ideas. Galileos objections to using the bible where very clear. He objected to using the bible as a source of knowledge of physical things because it would not always speak the truth on the surface. He feels that the truth and meaning lie underneath what is actually written down on the page. He believes we must use our senses God gave us to find the truth in the bible. He thinks the bible leads us to the abandonment of reason and our senses. Galileo does not argue that the bible is untrue, he strongly believes in the bible. He does feel that the bible can not be taken as the absolute truth though. He mentions that during the passage the bible speaks untrue but then if looked further into the passage he states that you will find the truth. Galileo wants us to look further into the bible and not just what is written on the page. He thinks we shall look further by using the knowledge and senses God gave us when we where created. Science contradicts the bible in many ways according to Galileo because scientists are looking further into and past what the bible says. So therefore scientists have different meanings of what the bible says. Scientists are more complex than the bible and it words. He explains this by saying that in the bible you will find words that say the sun moves and the earth stands still. If looked further into you will find that science contradicts this because as we no the earth moves around the sun. I think the bible is saying that the world is the center of the universe therefor everything revolves around what the earth does as a place. I think Galileo does believe in God. Galileo believes that God has good advice when looked further into and interpreted differently then what the bible says. How do you ensure that your remuneration packages incentivise and motivate the right people? How do you make sure that the amount of pay helps your staff with their lifestyle requirements? These questions are vital ones to anybody trying to run a sales team or customer service team, when you have a look at how you can actually reward personal effort as well as maintain service. In looking at any remuneration package, it’s worthwhile to consider a set of scales. In any job description, there is an opportunity to analyse the work required into service aspects whereby these things have to be done to maintain the client, or maintain the client relationship, such as receiving orders, implementing orders, handling queries, general items of customer service, and also perhaps even merchandising or helping with displays, as well as ensuring that stock levels are adequate, these can be called service areas or service responsibilities. On the other hand, a sales person or customer service representative could influence the value of the sale through their personal sales skills, personality, and training, to either make the sale happen, add value to the sale, or sell some specific items that are on special or on bonus, at the point of communication, either by phone, by web, or face-to-face. Strategies with this personal input can include: Commission on sales, which will drive the sales result but can lead to aggressive discounting. Commission on the profit generated, which will lead to profitable sales above a certain target percentage and encourage the sales people to focus on the profitable lines that need to be sold, profitable added value, and focus on profit. However, this means the company need to disclose in some manner the profit margins or the profitability of certain products or services. This then leads to greater enhanced teamwork in selling the profitable products and services that the company has. If your organization is primarily service based on our scale, then wages and salary with an annual review, perhaps a team result on a quarterly basis, will provide a good remuneration program to keep those service levels being maintained and perhaps even being increased.
